The Toughman Contest was created by Art Dore in 1979 in Bay City, Michigan. The concept was simple — take the working man off the street and put him in a boxing ring. The rules were basic: three one-minute rounds, protective headgear, and a whole lot of guts. It was an instant phenomenon.

Jerry Thomas and West Virginia Sports Promotions, Inc. brought the Toughman Contest to the Mountain State, building it into the most popular amateur sporting events in West Virginia history. Over the years the event has been broadcast on FX and pay-per-view television, attracting thousands of fans across the state.

West Virginia Sports Promotions also promotes professional boxing, MMA, and Kickboxing bouts throughout the state. Jerry also operates the Tommy Thomas Boxing Club on Duff Ave in Clarksburg, WV — offering training to anyone who wants to learn the sweet science.
